YUENDUMU BUSH TOMATO BLACK by Aboriginal Artist Audrey Napanangka - Audrey Napanangka - Northern Territory, AU THE DESIGN: Bush Tomato or wild tomato plant is usually waxy looking. It grows in creek areas of the Northern Territory. The ripe fruits have a strong fragrance that can be smelled from long distances. A single plant produces many fruits that are normally collected from the bushes in late summer and early winter when they've been sun-dried. There are over 100 varieties of bush tomato, but only a handful of these are edible and some varieties are poisonous. The artist's style is vivid and strong, and the design depicts women sitting around a waterhole with picked up fruits, a coolaman (special wooden toy), and digging sticks. |
